5 Ingredients

As you prepare for your Big Red BBQ in the coming days and weeks, we are thrilled to announce the 5 Ingredients for this year’s event!  As you know, cooking a healthy meal during a traditional Aussie BBQ is a big challenge – anyone can cook sausages and bread!  However, a healthy diet is crucial in kidney disease prevention and in maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle. 


With that, we are challenging YOU to cook with the following five ‘kidney friendly’ ingredients and see for yourself that healthy cooking is simple and can be accomplished at any time, during any social function or meal!


Drumroll please...  the 5 ingredients are:

Cherry, Eggplant, Polenta, Ricotta Cheese and Rosemary! 


We’ve selected these ingredients based on the health benefits each one of them can add to a healthy diet.

  Cherries are rich in antioxidants and have a lower glycaemic index than many other fruits which help reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease, stroke and diabetes. They are in season during late Spring and Summer, making them widely available and lower in cost – perfect addition to any Aussie Summer BBQ!
  Eggplant is rich in fibre, vitamin C, vitamin B6 and phytonutrients which all support good heart health and lower the risk of diabetes. Eggplant is a unique and interesting vegetable to cook with and tastes great grilled on the BBQ, diced as part of a kebab or roasted for a delicious salad.
  Polenta is a corn or maize-based food that is gluten and wheat free. It contains a good range of vitamins and minerals, including vitamin A, B-vitamins and zinc. It is also a great source of fibre and has a moderate glycaemic index which is important in controlling blood sugar and cholesterol. Polenta is a tasty, fun and versatile cooking ingredient – it is a great alternative to pasta, can be moulded into shapes and grilled on the BBQ and can also be used in a sweet dessert.
  Ricotta Cheese  has less potassium and phosphate than many other dairy foods which makes it a heathy choice for dialysis patients and people with high potassium and phosphate levels. It is a rich source of calcium, tastes great in lasagne and other pasta dishes, can be used to jazz up a salad or combined with other dessert ingredients to make a tasty sweet treat.
  Rosemary is a fantastic substitute for salt (which we all need to eat less of to ensure a healthy blood pressure) and adds a beautiful flavour to roast meats and vegetables. Use a sprig of this beautiful herb, dipped in olive oil, to brush your BBQ hotplate prior to cooking for a fragrant aroma and delicious taste to your meal. 


We know it might take some creative thinking to incorporate them into your BBQ, but we think you are up to the challenge!
